A Good Week
Last week was a good week from a quilty point of view! How often do you get to deliver two different quilts to their owners?
One has taken a year from selection of fabric to placing in the hands of the rightful owner. The other was a surprise. I'm not sure which I like better. Someone who has helped pick the fabric - chose the pattern - laid out the blocks - picked the quilting design - and then patiently waited. Are they less excited or more excited?
On the other side of the coin, handing a bag to someone who has been special in your life and telling them you made a quilt for their child. Out of the clear blue. To someone who really doesn't know a thing about quilting. Will probably refer to it as a "blanket". Thought the back side was the quilt until turning it over. I mean a total surprise!
Opposite ends of the spectrum and each equally fun. One to someone I love dearly. The other to someone I've never met but value her parent.
What's your pleasure? Take someone by surprise? Involve them along the way? A different approach? In the end, it's one of the best parts of making quilts, isn't it?

sometimes I will let a person choose one from 3 that I show to them. Other times I just surprise someone. Both ways are fun. I love the lattice quilt.
The first quilt I ever made was for my husband but I told him I was going to make a quilt for my mother. I dragged him to the fabric store and told him to help me pick out fabrics (ex: I need 2 more blue fabrics, etc). Then I told him he couldn't see it until it was finished. Kind of a combination of the two - total surprise since he didn't see the pattern or know it was for him, but he was involved choosing the fabrics too, heehee. Love the first one. Beautiful colors. I like the off-seting of the squares. and of course the white for the negative space.
Both are absolutely beautiful quilts. I prefer people don't know I'm making them a quilt ~ less pressure & I seem to get them done quicker.
Congratulations! What a nice feeling! So far in my quilting adventure, I have surprised people with quilts as gifts. For the most part, people have been thrilled. However, I have had a couple of dull responses to quilts that I have gifted. Oh well,you can't win them all!

I made 3 quilts last year - and I couldn't wait, so I let one lady see hers first. She LOVED it ... The other 2 loved theirs as well.
This year - the quilt recipients at least know their colors :)
I rarely ask someone's opinion when I plan to make them a quilt. I do try to make something they will be pleased with, but it has to be something I will enjoy making too.
most of my quilts are given away too, so I know the mixed emotions, sometimes I am not ready to part with one and it really helps when they are truly loved.
How fun to gift two quilts. Both are beautiful and I'm sure both will be loved.

Both are wonderful ! I too have had a occasional recipient think that the back was the top ! Though my favorite gift to date was a last minute birthday gift for my 3 year old cousin ! He refuses to sleep without it , much to his mothers agony when she forgets to put it in the dryer ! It might have something to do with me telling him it keeps monsters away when hes sleeping ... *wink*
Both are pretty! I would like to do the surprise way myself. It takes the pressure off of meeting their idea and it makes it more fun for me to build up to the surprise.

This reminds me of when I paint something for someone and maybe one client has been very specific in their requests and the other leaves it all up to me. I sometimes struggle hoping I am creating exactly what the former wants but then again a free reign, although fun, leaves me wondering if I am anywhere close to creating something they will cherish. What's a girl to do? :D

I am just a beginning quilter (and only for family) so I haven't had your experience giving many quilts away. I look forward to it in the future. Thanks for sharing at Inspire Us Thursday on Organized 31.
